Grading vs. French Drains: Fixing Water Pooling at the Source

Not every yard drainage problem needs a pipe in the ground. Sometimes the real issue is simpler and cheaper to fix: the yard just isn't sloped to move water away from the house in the first place. Understanding the difference between a grading problem and a drainage problem can save an OKC homeowner from installing a system they didn't actually need.
What Grading Actually Means
Grading is the slope of the land — ideally sloping gently away from a home's foundation so gravity does the work of moving water off the property naturally. Over years, soil settles, landscaping changes, and additions or hardscape projects can quietly flatten or even reverse that slope without anyone noticing until water starts pooling somewhere it never used to.
Signs Your Problem Is Grading, Not Drainage
If water pools specifically near the foundation or in a spot that used to be higher than the surrounding yard, if the pooling happens quickly during rain rather than building up over days, or if you can visibly see the yard sloping toward the house instead of away from it, that points to a grading issue rather than a subsurface drainage problem. In many of these cases, regrading the affected area solves the issue without adding any pipe or gravel system at all.
When Grading Alone Isn't Enough
Regrading works when the soil itself can handle the water once it's moving in the right direction. On Oklahoma's dense clay soil, water sometimes moves so slowly through the ground that even a well-graded yard still holds standing water for an extended period after rain. In these cases, grading is still the right first step, but it's often paired with a French drain or surface drain to actually move the water off the property rather than just redirecting where it sits.
Why Order of Operations Matters
Installing a drainage system into a yard with a real grading problem often means fighting the slope of the land the entire time. Correcting the grade first, then adding any drainage system needed on top of that corrected slope, produces a far more effective and lower-maintenance result than trying to solve a slope problem with pipe alone.
