Your Yard Draining, the Way It Should Be
Spring Rain Is Here: Is Your Oklahoma Yard Draining the Way It Should?

April in Oklahoma means one thing: rain. Lots of it. And if your yard is not draining properly, you already know — you have the muddy patches, the standing puddles, the saturated lawn that stays soft for days after a storm. If that sounds familiar, this is not a problem that will fix itself over summer. It will get worse every time it rains.
At Elite Outdoor Living Solutions, we solve
drainage problems for Bethany and OKC metro homeowners every spring. Here is what you need to know.
Why Oklahoma Yards Are So Prone to Flooding
Oklahoma's signature clay-heavy soil is the root cause of most residential drainage issues in our area. Clay does not absorb water the way sandy or loamy soil does — it compacts, swells, and repels. When spring rains hit fast and hard (as they often do), the water has nowhere to go but across the surface and into low spots in your yard.
Add in improperly graded lots from original construction, aging landscape features, and properties that have settled over time — and you have conditions that make ponding almost inevitable.
The damage compounds over time: eroded topsoil, dead grass and landscaping, foundation risk from saturated soil near your home, and a yard that becomes unusable from April through June every single year.
Six Drainage Solutions We Install
We do not sell one-size-fits-all drainage fixes. Every yard is different, and the right solution depends on where the water is coming from, where it needs to go, and what your yard's topography allows.
French Drains: A perforated pipe embedded in gravel that runs underground and intercepts subsurface water before it can surface. Excellent for yards where water wells up from below after heavy rain.
Channel Drains: Surface-level linear drains set flush with concrete or hardscape that capture sheet runoff from driveways, pool decks, and patios before it reaches the lawn.
Catch Basins: Below-grade collection boxes with grated surface inlets that pull in large volumes of runoff and route it out via underground pipe. Often used in low spots where water consistently collects.
Downspout Extensions and Buried Lines: Your gutters can dump hundreds of gallons of water near your foundation during a single storm. We redirect that water away from your home and deep into your yard or to a street outlet.
Regrading and Swales: Sometimes the fix is as simple as reshaping the land — creating a gradual slope or a subtle channel (swale) that naturally directs water away from problem zones.
Dry Creek Beds: A functional and visually appealing option that uses decorative rock to create a defined water channel. Works beautifully in landscape beds and yard edges while solving real drainage problems.
