What to Ask Before Hiring a Pool Builder
What to Ask Before Hiring a Pool Builder in Oklahoma City

A pool is one of the biggest projects you'll ever put in your backyard, and once it's in the ground, it's in the ground. You don't get a do-over. That's exactly why the builder you choose matters more than almost any other decision in the process — and why the cheapest quote is so often the most expensive one in the end.
We build pools across the OKC metro, and we'd rather you hire the right contractor than the wrong one, even on the days that isn't us. So here's the honest list of what to ask, what to watch for, and what those suspiciously low bids are usually hiding before you sign anything.
The Questions That Actually Matter
Anyone can show you a pretty photo gallery. These are the questions that separate a real builder from a risk:
- Is this a fixed-price quote, or an estimate that can move? You want a detailed, written, fixed price so the number you sign is the number you pay.
- Is the deck included? Some quotes price only the pool shell and leave the decking off, which is a five-figure surprise waiting to happen.
- Are permits and grading in the number? These aren't optional, and they shouldn't be buried or excluded.
- What exactly is excluded? Fencing, equipment pads, electrical, and cleanup sometimes live in the fine print.
- What's the real timeline for my build? A builder who can't give you a week-by-week schedule can't keep one.
- How long have you been building pools here? Local experience with Oklahoma soil and weather matters.
What Cheaper Quotes Usually Hide
A low bid isn't automatically a bad one — but when a quote comes in dramatically under everyone else, the difference came from somewhere. Usually one of these:
- No deck — the single most common way to make a pool quote look cheap
- No finish specified — "pool" with no finish is a blank you'll fill in with money later
- Permits excluded — left off the quote, added to your bill
- Undersized equipment — a pump or filter that won't keep up, costing you down the line
- Thin or skipped base work — the part you can't see is the part that fails first
- Change-order traps — a low starting number that climbs with every "extra"
Red Flags to Walk Away From
Some signs aren't worth the risk no matter how good the price looks:
- Won't put the quote in writing, or won't itemize it
- Pressures you to sign today or "lose the price"
- Can't show you finished local jobs you can actually look at
- Asks for a large cash deposit up front
- Is vague about who's actually doing the work
- Dodges questions about permits, timeline, or what's excluded
Know What Type of Pool You're Buying
A good builder will walk you through the options instead of pushing one. When we handle an inground pool installation, the three main types each fit different priorities:
- Gunite (concrete) — the most popular in OKC, built for our freeze-thaw climate, with unlimited freedom on shape and features
- Fiberglass — faster install, smooth low-maintenance surface, pre-manufactured shell
- Vinyl liner — the budget-friendly option with replaceable liners
If a builder only offers one type and insists it's always the answer, that's worth noting. The right pool depends on your yard, budget, and how you want to use it — not on what's easiest for the contractor.
Get It in Writing
This is the one that protects you most. Every promise — the price, the deck, the finish, the timeline, what's included and excluded — belongs in a written, itemized contract. A verbal "don't worry, that's covered" is worth nothing when there's a dispute three weeks into the dig. A builder confident in their work will happily put it all on paper. One who hesitates is telling you something.
What a Good Pool Build Process Looks Like
For reference, here's how a straightforward build should run, so you know what to expect:
- Site evaluation — the builder walks your property and checks access, grading, and soil
- Design and fixed-price quote — pool type, shape, features, and a written number
- Permits and planning — handled by the builder, timeline built into the schedule
- Excavation, shell, plumbing, and decking — the construction phases, typically 6 to 12 weeks
- Finishing, fill, and startup — then you swim
How Elite Outdoor Living Solutions Earns the Job
We've been building outdoor spaces across the metro for over 20 years, and we quote fixed prices after a real site evaluation — no surprise costs mid-build. When we sit down with homeowners in Bethany, Yukon, Edmond, Mustang, Moore, or Nichols Hills, we put the whole scope in writing, walk you through pool types honestly as your OKC pool contractor, and tell you where your money is best spent. If another approach fits your yard or budget better, we'll say so. That's how we'd want to be treated, so that's how we do it.
